A Colorful Landmark in Rockaway Beach
You can't miss Richard's Custom Framing and Gifts in Rockaway Beach. It's the shop near the Wayside on U.S. Highway 101 that is painted in a kaleidoscope of colors and crammed with an eclectic mix of handcrafts and assorted collections.
And you can't miss the owner, Richard Patten, either. When his shop is open, you can find him there wearing his fishing hat and chatting folks up out on the front deck. The colorful building is also Patten's home and the place where he does his many crafts, from picture framing, to building 150-200 birdhouses annually, to making benches, glass jewelry and now fused glass plaques.
He also has a passion for collecting wild mushrooms and he enjoys helping out his community. He is a chef at the annual spaghetti feed. "This year, I spent two days cooking sauce. I made 78 quarts and every bit of it sold to benefit our Park and Recreation program," he noted.

Patten came to Rockaway Beach after a long career as an engineer in the Portland area. He says he had always had hobbies. Over the years, he made pine furniture and sold it. And he got into food drying, eventually selling the dryers and teaching drying techniques at a local community college. But he had a dream of retiring to a beach community and buying a building where he could live over his shop and sell the thing
